No Child Left Behind

Summary The No Child Left Behind Act is an education-reform bill passed by the United States Congress and signed into law in January of 2002. No Child Left Behind dramatically increases the role of the federal government in K-12 education, focusing efforts on increased student achievement, teacher quality, and accountability for results.

Our goal in the Vermilion Local Schools is that every school in the district be a high performing school, that all children succeed in a rigorous curriculum, and that all teachers are highly qualified and dedicated to the success of our children. The district has made great strides in each of these areas, and NCLB provides additional opportunities for increasing student achievement.

What should the school district tell me about NCLB?

1. Teacher Qualifications The Vermilion Local Schools is proud of our dedicated and highly qualified teachers. If you would like information about the qualifications of your child's teacher(s) please contact the building principal or the personnel office.

The district will notify parents any time their child(ren) have been assigned to a teacher who is not highly qualified for four or more consecutive weeks.

2. Parent Involvement Parental Involvement is a key component of a student's success. You can assist your child in the following ways: · Become a model reader for your child(ren). Let them see you reading and read with them. · Contact your child's teacher as soon as the school year starts. Find out how you can help. · Attend the parent meetings and conferences held at your child's school, and make suggestions for meeting times and topics.

3. Adequate Yearly Progress Parents will be notified whenever the district fails to meet AYP. This refers to all groups of students meeting state expectations for Proficiency and Achievement Tests.

4. Achievement Test Results Parents are sent the results of their child's state academic assessments (Proficiency and Achievement). District and individual building results can also be found on the district HOME page.

5. Limited English Proficient Students Parents of any child identified for participation in the Title III funded LEP Program will be notified of the reason for identification and other information about the program. (Currently there is no Title III funded program offered in this district.)

6. School Improvement Notices If your child's building is identified as a Title I school improvement building (Failing to meet AYP) you will be notified by the district.

7. Homeless Children Parents should contact the district for information concerning educational regulations regarding homeless students if applicable.

8. Title I and Special Education Funding Applications Parents and community members will be surveyed annually for the purpose of providing input as to how federal funds should be spent.
