Nicholas J. Mayer - Nicholas J. Mayer is a 1959 graduate
of Vermilion High School. While attending VHS, Mayer received a
varsity letter in Basketball and Track. His efforts in track
resulted in the Lakeland Conference record for the mile. After
graduation, Nick volunteered for the United States Army and served
in France for two years.
Returning to Vermilion, he joined the Vermilion Police Department.
While working full time on the force, he attended and graduated
with honors, from Lorain County Community College with an
Associates Degree in Police Science and a Bachelor’s Degree in
Psychology from Heidelberg College in 1975.
During the thirty one years that Nick was on the Police Department,
he served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Harbormaster, and Court Officer.
In 1989 he was appointed as Chief of Police. During his career,
Nick emphasized the role of education within the police department.
He was a professor of Police Science at LCCC and was instrumental
in bringing notable speakers to the area to assist in the education
of police officers. In 1986, Mayer was invited to attend and
graduated from the prestigious Federal Bureau of Investigation
Academy (FBI) in Quantico, Virginia.
While serving the City of Vermilion, Nick was a vital participant
in the development of many projects such as, the Lorain County 911
Emergency System, establishing and securing funding for the marine
patrol boat and the department’s first drug dog, development of the
DARE program to reduce underage drinking in the Vermilion Local
School District and the rehabilitation of the Municipal Court
Facility. He is a member and Past President of the Lorain County
Police Chief’s Association and the Rotary Club. Nick also serves as
a board member of Operation Christmas Joy and is very active in the
Vermilion Lions Club.
Nick resides in Vermilion with his wife of 45 years, Rita Ann and
has 2 grown children-Daniel and Lee Ann. Walking across the field
with Nick Mayer is his wife Rita. They will be escorted this
evening by Senior Class Secretary Annie Olsieski and Senior Class
Representative Jacob Casto.
