Board of Education

HIGH SCHOOL BUSING WILL RESUME FOR 2010-2011

July 13, 2010

The Vermilion Board of Education voted last night to reinstate busing for high school students for the 2010-2011 school year, following a recommendation from Superintendent Philip Pempin.  The Superintendent emphasized that the “Reinvention Plan” originally discussed in January is a work in progress.  Pempin said that the entire team felt it was important to restore high school busing, if possible, to make sure children of working parents are able to travel to and from school safely, especially since the projects to be completed through the Safe Routes to School Grant will not be in place to begin the school year.

The Administration and Board Members are constantly working to provide the best educational opportunities to Vermilion students, while focusing on fiscal responsibility for the community.  Pempin explained that as part of closing the 2009-2010 fiscal year Treasurer Amy Hendricks was able to update the forecast to incorporate the most current data on various cost savings initiatives.  Two key components have been additional savings realized through the consolidation of school facilities and positive experience with the medical insurance consortium that minimized July 1 rate increases.  Pempin felt the projections would allow the district to reinstate high school busing for 2010-2011, while still keeping the promise to wait 2 years before asking voters for additional money.

Parents who wish to take advantage of high school busing are required to register their children no later than Monday, July 26, 2010.  Postcard notices are being mailed to homes of all high school students, and telephone notification calls will be sent daily to all parents from July 13 through July 16.

Parents who have questions about transportation can contact Linda Griffin, Transportation Supervisor, at 440-204-1731.
