SUMMER 2010 LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

The following summer learning opportunities are available to high school and middle school students.  THESE PROGRAMS ARE NOT SPONSORED BY THE VERMILION SCHOOLS.  If your child is interested in participating, please contact the College or University listed below.  

Applications Now Available for 2010 Pre-College Engineering Summer Programs at Ohio State. The Ohio State University College of Engineering will host four programs for pre-college students during the summer of 2010. Organized by the university’s Women in Engineering Program (WiE), each of these programs is designed to spark students’ interest in engineering and to increase their knowledge of engineering-related career fields. Ohio State Engineering Summer Experience - This program will run from July 11-16, 2010, and provide students with the opportunity to be both introduced to the fundamentals of engineering and immersed in a robotics experience that will serve as an exciting, popular vehicle for the delivery of those fundamentals. While the focus will be on robotics, the course will introduce the student to the various engineering disciplines and teach him or her some engineering fundamentals. The Engineering Summer Experience is a week-long program. The cost per session for on-campus dormitory housing (multiple occupancy), all meals, and supervised evening activities is $295, payable at time of dorm check-in. This program is intended for high school students currently enrolled in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. The application deadline is April 15, 2010. Wright State Summer Programs
The Office of Pre-College Programs at Wright State University is once again pleased to offer a fantastic summer of educational enrichment programs for the academically motivated students entering grades 6-12. Established in 1988, Pre-College Programs has served thousands of students through hands-on, experiential academic enrichment programs held on the main campus of Wright State. Classes this year will include the following: archaeology, math and statistics, writing, television production, digital photography, engineering, leadership, theatre, law, poetry, nursing, communication, forensic science, and anatomy and physiology. The College of Wooster Buckeye Women in Science, Engineering, and Research (B-WISER) summer science camp for girls (a partnership of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and the College of Wooster) will be held at The College of Wooster from June 20 – 25, 2010. This team taught, hands-on science experience is open to girls who will complete 7th grade this academic year. Laboratory work in earth science, life science, chemistry, energy conservation, physics and engineering will be included in the camp. Miami University
is hosting the B the Change (U Wish 2 C) program again during summer 2010: Dates are July 12-23. Please see www.muohio.edu/LLL/shi for more information. The newer website will be found at www.muohio.edu/LLL/btc . Updated application materials and the website are now available. Also, please note that we have expanded the grade range to include those students who are currently in grades 9, 10, or 11 however, the curriculum and most faculty members remain the same. Applications due May 21, 2010.

University of Dayton
Study challenging engineering topics through hands-on activities in each area of engineering: Design, build and control robots during a week-long project; and use state of the art engineering laboratories and equipment Interact with other motivated, bright students and supportive faculty. Experience engineering during the Honors Engineering Camp at the University of Dayton, July 18-23, 2010. The camp is open to all honor students currently in grades 9, 10, or 11. University of Oregon
The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) at the University of Oregon is now taking applications for 2010 sessions. SEP is a residential academic enrichment summer program for 6-10 grade gifted and highly able students that is held on the university’s main campus. In each two-week program session, students attend six academic classes of their choice during the day, and participate in a variety of social activities at night. The program encourages students to create a personalized schedule that reflects their academic and recreational interests, and gives them some early exposure to learning and living in a university environment. It also provides students with a chance to immerse themselves in a unique social environment, where they can meet and spend time with similar students that they might not have metotherwise. University of Southern Mississippi

Several summer programs are being offered at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies. Programs include a leadership studies, gifted studies, a summer program for academically talented youth, as well as teacher programs. Visit http://www.usm.edu/gifted/ for more information.
