The grading for Concert Band can be a little confusing so some clarification is provided. Attached here is also a copy of the 3rd Quarter Syllabus.
Each student’s grade is comprised of 2 areas (Director Mandated and Student Directed) and is out of 100 points (100%).
The Directed Mandated portion of the class is worth 85 points (85%) of the total grade and is divided into three areas:
1). Prepared and Positive Participation (50 points)
2). Band Concert March 2nd (20 points)
3). Music Playing Test (up to 10 points)
-If their participation is positive in class, they perform in the concert, and do well on their playing test, each student can easily get all 85 points (85%).
The Student Directed portion of the class is 15 points (15%) of the total grade and students obtain these points by choosing and completing different available activities on their own:
1). Practicing (3 points per hour or practice with an unlimited # of hours)
2). Paper on Musical Topic (up to 10 points)
3). Concert Music Practice Guides (up to 2 points each with a max of doing 5)
4). Program Notes (up to 5 points each with a max of doing 3)
5). Taking Private Lessons on primary instrument (10 points)
6). Taking Private Lessons on secondary instrument (5 points)
7). Performing in extra ensembles (5 points each)
8). Performing in Pep Bands (3 points each)
9). Concert Attendance (3 points each with a max of doing 5)
10). Participating in Solo & Ensemble (10 points per performance)
11). Office Assistance (2 points per hour of help)
As with other classes at Vermilion High School, the Band program has adopted an A+ Project. If a student reaches 100 points (100%) by the end of the quarter, he/she is eligible to do an A+ Project. An A+ project is some kind of project related either to the literature being performed or having to do with the band and it’s instruments/historical figures/musicals styles and time periods. This is something each student must come up with on his/her own. It’s highly advised that if a student is interested in earning and A+, they should come up with an idea by the deadline and work on it through the quarter even if he/she doesn’t earn 100 points (100%) in the class. The points will simply carry over to the next grading period.
As the Band Program has many things going on at once, the attached file here is a chronological order of many different upcoming events and due dates for student projects.
