Calculus Class Takes Annual Crewing Field Trip

The Calculus class took its annual crewing field trip this past Wednesday, May 26, 2010. This year’s trip marked the 6th year running and was by far the best weather day we have had yet.
Back in 2005, we were looking for a trip experience for the Calculus class that was both motivational and curriculum related. After sending out email requests to several places, Matt Previts, the coach of the rowing team at St Ignatius high school enthusiastically invited us out. With the volunteer help of his assistant coaches and senior athletes, they spent the day training our students on rowing machines, dock boxes, equipment handling and finally, rowing an 8 man boat on the Cuyahoga river. This year, alumni returned from all over the country to help out. Our kids spent the day working and training hard and were rewarded with a once in a lifetime experience. On their way to mastering the teamwork needed to move an 8 man shell, they rowed to the mouth of the river and out onto Lake Erie, the furthest any group has ever gone.
St Ignatius high school has a world class rowing program with athletes and equipment that rivals most colleges. I would like to thank Coach Previts and his athletes for taking the time to make this annual trip one of the hallmarks of the Calculus class experience. Click on photo to view more pictures.
