As Principal and on behalf
of the faculty and staff I would like to welcome you to Vermilion High School,
I would like to welcome you to the 2007-2008 school year.
Once again,
Vermilion
High School is proud to
announce that for the fifth year in a row we have received a
rating of “Excellent” on our State Report Card. We do
not believe that our continued state recognition happens by
chance. It is primarily the result of three things:
(1) a community that is involved and committed to VHS (2) a
motivated student body and (3) a dedicated and outstanding
faculty. While I publicly acknowledge the
classroom teachers role in the successful schooling of our
students, anyone who has worked in a public school knows
that the secretaries, cafeteria staff, teacher aides,
custodians and bus drivers play vitally important roles in
creating a school environment that is safe, clean conducive
to student learning. At Vermilion High School
all jobs are important and each of them contributes directly
to the welfare and success of our students.
Facility improvements at the high school include providing
handicap access to the restrooms for our students and
community. Also on the agenda was replacing and
upgrading building lighting and safety sensors. At the
stadium we have renovated the visitor bleachers and replaced
field lighting and added a new sound system.
Academically, one of the most interesting course additions
is the expansion of our Industrial Arts program with a new
Integrated Technology Concepts class. This 1-2 year program
will encourage the students active learning of career based
information in one of seven major technology sectors.
Upper level classes will challenge the students to build a
working prototype of a product idea related to one of the
sectors. Please contact our Guidance department for
more information on his exciting new course offering.
Two great sources of information on what is happening at Vermilion High School
are the internet at:
www.vermilionschools.org and also our cable channel 20
WVLS. If you visit either of these you will see a
listing of our fall events and a yearly school calendar for
your future planning
Many of our faculty and staff have been busy during the summer
preparing our extracurricular programs for your enjoyment.
We are certainly grateful for their commitment and
dedication to our student body. The athletes, marching
band, and cheerleaders are all excited about the coming fall
season. Link Crew will make its debut this year at
VHS.
Link Crew is a high school transition program
that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable
throughout the first year of their high school experience.
Built on the belief that students can help students succeed,
Link Crew trains members of the junior and senior class to
be
Link Leaders. As
positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators and
teachers who guide the freshmen to discover what it takes to
be successful during the transition to high school. By the
way, I would encourage all of our students to get involved
in VHS this year and continue to support each other at the
many activities.
Please feel free to contact the office, the school
counselors or your son or daughters teachers when you have
questions, concerns or need advice. Remember that with
Progressbook grades are updated on the web on a regular
basis for your information. As we make final
preparations for this school year, I would like to thank
everyone for their continued support and attendance at the
events at VHS. We are certainly looking forward to
serving the community of Vermilion again this year.
Go
Sailors!
Mr. Mike Colatruglio,
VHS Principal
